Honeysuckle: Lonicera

Honeysuckle vines do very well in Boulder.  They love our sunshine and are very heat tolerant.  They are easy to grow and develop very quickly and are nearly indestructable.  The vines bloom heavily in the spring with a profushion offragrant, flamboyant flowers.  You'll get some blossoms all summer long attracting hummingbirds and butterflies.

There are over 160 varieties of honeysuckle, but all do well on a trellis, arbor, fence or some kind of framework to hold them upright.  Tie the vines securly to the framework with strong, stretchy materials that won't cut into thegrowing stem.  Ties are best looped into a figure eight with the crossed portion between the stem and the support. That will keep the stems from rubbing or being choked.  Vines grow vigorously so plant them 6 to 12 inches from the support to give them room to grow.

Honeysuckles love sunshine, but will also tolerate light shade.  They can also be grown as a ground cover and will spread quickly.  If using them for groundcover, plant them 2 to 3 feet apart. Don't over fertilize honeysuckle.  One good feeding with a well balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer at the beginning of the growing season is usually enough to keep them healthy and happy.
